Ojai Valley Inn & Spa | Ojai, CA

Ojai, California is a quaint and rural community that has been attracting visitors for years with its charming downtown known for its bohemian shops, art galleries, wine and olive tasting, and expanding culinary scene.

Nestled within this serene coastal valley is the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, a luxurious retreat situated on an idyllic 220 acres. This historic resort has been honored in many well-known rankings affirming its status as a world-renowned spa and golf destination, {see awards and accolades here}. The Ojai Valley Inn also has the distinction of being a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts Legend family and is registered with the prestigious Historic Hotels of America.

The Property

The Ojai Valley Inn {Inn} borders the Los Padres National Forest and lies at the base of the Topatopa mountain range. The ancient Chumash Indians were original settlers in this valley and they believed that the valley held mystical powers. There is a special feeling about this property from the serene surroundings to the phenomenon that happens each evening at sunset known as the “Pink Moment,” when the fading sunset creates a brilliant shade of pink for several minutes over the Topatopa bluffs. It’s a sight that will stop you in your tracks reveling in its beauty.

The Ojai Valley Inn has been welcoming travelers since its opening in 1923 and continues to redefine luxury year after year. With the unspoiled natural beauty of the region, an abundance of unique spa services, experiential classes, golf, tennis and so much more, it’s no wonder this property continually attracts a celebrity clientele as well as those seeking serenity, relaxation, and spiritual rejuvenation.

The property is adorned with colorful Spanish tile accents, soothing water features, whimsical lanterns hanging from a 200-year-old oak tree, Pixie Tangerine trees, lush landscaping, fire pits, and intimate seating areas throughout the grounds creating a pleasant ambiance.

Guest Rooms

The Ojai Valley Inn is a large resort with just over 300 rooms that are spread out over the expansive property. This Spanish Colonial-style resort offers many different room categories {see categories here}, yet all the spacious rooms are designed in similar soothing Mediterranean hues of blues, creams, and tans with a simplistic sophistication that creates a tranquil environment.

I have personally stayed at this resort numerous times in several different locations, and I will admit that I prefer to stay a little closer to the spa where it’s quieter and more serene, away from the main hub of activity such as the reception, restaurants, shops and open grounds where this very family-friendly resort can be quite active at times.

My personal favorite buildings are 22-26, these are close walking distance to the Spa Village and many of these rooms offer beautiful views of the grounds, oak trees, and golf course {see here for property map}. These buildings are located farthest away from the restaurants and shops but there is a shuttle service that runs throughout the resort at regular intervals, if desired. These buildings mentioned are located close to The Farmhouse, the culinary event center, which is situated independently from the guest rooms and does not hinder the serene setting of the rooms.

For those of you who are avid golfers or prefer to stay close to the action, Building 21 is a lovely setting and located close to the 1st Tee of the golf course. From this building, you can practically step out of your room and onto the driving range or golf course, therefore, note that there is quite a bit of activity here throughout the day. Building 19 and 20 are also located in this same general area but don’t have as much foot and golf cart traffic and some of the rooms look out over the driving range and golf course.

Other rooms that offer some golf course views and provide a little more privacy are located in Buildings 11, 12, 14-17. These buildings are close to the Orchard, Pixie Pool and are a convenient walk to the main hub of activity.

If you are looking for a more luxurious spa stay, the Inn has added newly remodeled Spa Penthouse suites. These luxury suites offer views of the Ojai Valley in a serene spa setting. Choose from the Sunset Penthouse Suite, a 1,500-foot two-bedroom space featuring a stone fireplace and custom dry-bar, or the Moonlight Penthouse Suite, a 1,500-foot two-bedroom penthouse suite with 16-foot vaulted ceilings and grand arched windows.

For the ultimate in privacy and extraordinary accommodations, stay at the property’s private 10,000 sq. ft. residence at Casa Elar {see fact sheet here}. Ideal for a family reunion, girls’ getaway or destination wedding, this five-bedroom Tuscan-style private villa, is the epitome of exclusive luxury. Located on an acre of lush landscaping, the residence comes with its own staff, two master suites, a chef’s kitchen, 12 limestone fireplaces, a private jacuzzi and pool.

Dining

There are several dining options available onsite from poolside casual fare to fine dining. Two of my favorites are The Oak for the alfresco dining enjoyment and views of the Topatopa mountain range, along with Jimmy’s Pub which is a great spot for a casual meal or sipping some drinks while overlooking the general grounds and people-watching.

Olivella

The star of Ojai Valley Inn’s restaurant collection, Olivella is open five days a week and establishes a deep connection to local Ojai culture. Olivella sets an authentic stage for distinctly California cuisine with Italian influences in a serene setting. As a complement to the cuisine, the award-winning wine program showcases expertly curated discoveries and classic bottlings from notable producers highlighting the diverse California wine country and food-friendly gems from Italy.

The Oak

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Oak, is an indoor-outdoor restaurant with a picturesque view. The Oak overlooks a championship golf course and a striking mountain range, replete with centuries-old oak trees lining the entrance. Menu offerings include fresh and original valley cuisine.

Wallace Neff Heritage Bar

The most important and notable room in Ojai, the Wallace Neff Heritage Bar, is a nod to the eponymous founder and the original clubhouse of the Ojai Valley Country Club. Offering time-honored classic cocktails, modern spirits, and small plates in an intimate setting…and you never know what might happen here, you just might drum up a conversation with an Academy Award-winning screenwriter {happened to me}.

Jimmy’s Pub

Named for golf legend, Jimmy Demaret, the pub borrows from Demaret’s famous personality and style by creating vibrant dining options on each menu. Lunch, dinner, cocktails, and a rotating beer list provide a casual, family-friendly atmosphere that serves as a 19th hole after a long day on the course or the office. The pub is one of my favorite spots because the food is casual and good, and the location is perfect for people watching. A great spot to have a drink at sunset and watch the Pink Moment.

Spa Café

Located within the peaceful Spa Ojai Village, Spa Café offers indoor or alfresco seating in the courtyard, adjacent to the Tranquility Pool. Health-conscious and dietary options include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. Spa Café offers a fresh, made-to-order pressed juice bar serving light breakfast and refreshing smoothies in a lovely enclave.

Libbey’s

An artisan market, plus a convenient takeaway counter featuring Kings Row coffee drinks, unique pastries and treats, fresh salads, handcrafted breakfast and lunch offerings, and McConnell’s ice cream. Lining the shelves at Libbey’s are a variety of kitchen essentials, cookbooks, and the Inn’s own handmade signature items such as dried pasta and s’mores kits— the perfect gift to take home! Also a perfect spot to grab some items for a picnic lunch.

In-Room Dining

Don’t forget to take advantage of the in-room dining as well. Many of the rooms have lovely patios with great views, a perfect place for a relaxing dining experience.

The Farmhouse

The Farmhouse is a culinary-inspired event venue featuring winemaker dinners, cooking demonstrations, mixology classes, and exclusive chef experiences. This 30,000-square-foot, indoor/outdoor events facility consists of a wine library, show kitchen, 8,500-square-foot barn-inspired ballroom and a 10,000-square-foot lawn, and plays hosts to more than 100 culinary activities (from tastings to cooking classes) throughout the year.

These culinary experiential experiences at the Farmhouse give guests access to acclaimed farmers, winemakers, and Michelin Star/James Beard culinary professionals who share their knowledge in a series of master class events. View website for current events offered {here}.

You might not expect to find a barn-style venue amid the Spanish Colonial architecture that is throughout the rest of the property, however, this was an intentional design component to incorporate part of the agricultural heritage of Ojai. The barn is modern and refined in design and is used as an exhibition center for culinary and mixology classes, and so much more. The barn doors open up to a wonderful courtyard with a large, double-sided open fireplace and comfortable seating areas. Also located at The Farmhouse are the produce garden and the Pixie Tangerine trees that you will find have a reoccurring theme throughout the property.

Spa Village

The Spa Village is a enclave within the resort that is comprised of the Spa, Fitness Center, Spa Café, Boutique, Tranquility and Energy Pools and the Artist Cottage and Apothecary studio.

One of my fondest memories of this resort is from my very first visit with a girlfriend where we purchased a 3-day spa package that included two spa treatments a day. It felt so decadent to plan our days around our treatments, meditation and wellness classes, and relaxation by the pool. We practically lived in our spa robes throughout our stay. We became friendly with the producer of a very popular sitcom at the time and enjoyed spending time with her, hearing her stories, and she eventually joined us for walks around the property. I share this story because the spa experience I had here was so memorable that it has remained with me for decades. This spa is so much more than just about having a treatment, it’s a true destination spa that provides you with an experience that invigorates and rejuvenates your mind, body, and soul and leaves you with a lasting impression that makes you want to come back for more.

Spa and Fitness Center

In my opinion, this destination Spa is the defining characteristic of this property. From the soothing color palettes, cozy-chic furnishings to the serenity lounge and beyond, this full-service spa offers something for everyone.

There are so many unique services available here. One of the most popular services is The Kuyam Experience, a Native American-inspired treatment that combines the therapeutic effects of self-applied desert clay infused with essential oils, intense dry heat, and inhalation therapy. In a sauna-like environment, the journey is guided by a traditional Chumash narrative. This unique detoxifying experience is concluded with a refreshing rinse and presentation of herbal tea while your body core temperature cools.

Other services offered include a variety of massages, stretch therapy, sound-energy therapy, skincare treatments, nail services, and more {see here}.

Complimentary fitness classes are available to spa and resort guests. Inquire in advance about the personalized wellness programs, private small and large group classes, private hikes, and geocaching adventures.

Spa Café

The Spa Café features a light breakfast and lunch with indoor or outdoor courtyard seating serving casual, healthy cuisine.

Boutique

The Spa Boutique features skin care product lines used in a wide variety of Spa Ojai treatments, along with a curated collection of athletic apparel, swimwear, and loungewear.

Artist Cottage and Apothecary

Awaken your creativity at the Inn’s haven for self-discovery and expression. The Artist in Residence will guide you through an offering of classes; whether a novice or an expert, the Artist Cottage is your sanctuary for expression. Classes include art classes, custom aroma blending, glass, tile and silk scarf painting, along with many children’s exploration classes.

Activites

Golf

The Inn’s 18-hole golf course has hosted seven Senior PGA TOUR events that brought legendary superstars such as Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw and others to challenge the historic course and two EMC2 Golf Skills Challenges. The Ojai Valley Inn has played host to countless celebrities from nearby Hollywood and an impressive roster of golf pros who return year after year to play the historic course.

Tennis

Voted as one of the ‘Top 50 Tennis Resorts’ by Tennis Magazine, Ojai Valley Inn is the ideal Southern California tennis resort for anyone who wants to improve their game or just have fun. Court fees are complimentary and available with advanced reservations.

Apiary

Pools

Enjoy any one of the four pools on property:

Indigo: An adult poolside experience offering a full bar, wine, and craft beers from California’s top producers. Indigo Pool & Bar’s menu highlights California’s perennial produce with salads, sandwiches, ceviche and lettuce cups, served in a relaxing oasis setting.

Pixie Pool: This family-friendly pool is set among vine-covered pergolas and estate citrus trees. Enjoy lunch in the shaded alfresco dining area with a menu designed for all ages focusing on pure and simple California ingredients. Adults can sip refreshing cocktails while younger guests are treated to fresh-fruit smoothies and decadent milkshakes. The expansive pool deck features plush seating, a lavish hot tub adjacent to the grand fireplace and private cabana service by reservation.

Spa Pools: Relax and experience the calm and tranquil surroundings of Spa Ojai’s intimate Tranquility Pool featuring guests cabanas for added privacy; or dive into the two-lane, 60-foot Energy Pool with outdoor hot tub and beautiful vistas.

Bikes

The Inn offers complimentary custom Linus Bikes, striking white cruisers adorned with a shiny orange bell inspired by the area’s Pixie tangerines. This is a perfect way to visit downtown Ojai just one mile away. For the ultimate day of adventure, pick up a customizable artisanal picnic for purchase from Libbey’s to stock the bicycle baskets and a map of the area’s many scenic, picnic-worthy stops. Bikes are based on availability.

Trolley or Walking Trails

The Inn offers a Ojai Trolley Service to their guests. The Inn is located just 1 mile outside of Ojai which makes for an enjoyable trip downtown via the Trolley or walking trail to explore the eclectic shopping, wine tasting, art galleries, and farm-to-table eateries.

Kiddos

Camp Oak is a place where young guests between 4 and 12 can find day and night interactive fun, outdoor activities and arts and crafts…a complimentary half-day session is included in your stay. Activities like customized treasure hunts, dive-in movies, s’mores roasting and holiday-themed surprises fill the year-round agenda.

Discover Ojai Center

To further enrich guest experiences, Discover Ojai blends the concept of a destination visitors center with the traditional role of a resort concierge, ultimately providing the personal approach of creating custom itineraries for each guest stay. The Inn’s “Experience Planners” can arrange everything from your on-property spa and dining activities to private yacht excursions to wine and olive oil tasting, all curated personally under one roof for the guest’s ultimate convenience.

Surrounding Area

If by chance all of the above is not enough to keep you occupied, there are many adventures to be had within an hour radius of the Inn. Take a twelve-mile drive to the beach at Ventura, this city offers a great casual vibe, lots of shops, and good restaurants; or if you’re looking for something a little more high-end, head into downtown Santa Barbara or head to The Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley…or any one of the many options this incredible area has to offer.

Summary

This multi-faceted resort offers a diverse appeal to everyone from families, couples, friends, as well as, golf, spa, and culinary enthusiasts. For over 90 years, this resort has been a refuge for anyone desiring a private retreat seeking rest and relaxation, and over the years it has continued to redefine its culture to reflect the growing interests of its guests while staying true to the authentic spirit of Ojai.

This resort offers so much more than a room and some spa services, it offers the opportunity for spiritual wellness, the opportunity to learn alongside Michelin Star chefs, and who knows maybe even the opportunity to meet an Academy Award winner. These are all experiences that can broaden your perspective and maybe even give you a bragging right or two, and you can’t put a price tag on that.
