Four Seasons | Seattle, WA

I’m not quite sure what took me so long to visit the Seattle area considering California is so close but I’m so glad I finally made it there. Seattle is a vibrant city with a feel very similar to San Francisco. What finally lured me to the area was my curiosity to experience the Four Seasons hotel which has been getting a slew of accolades including being named by the Forbes Five Star Travel Guide as the only five-star hotel, not only in the Seattle area but in the state of Washington. Impressive.

Seattle 14

The Property

Built from the ground up in 2008, this contemporary high-rise building is located in downtown Seattle at the waterfront and only a block away from the famous Pike Place Market. This is quite a departure and change in style from their previous location at the historic Olympic Hotel a few blocks away.

I’m always impressed to see when a property incorporates the local flavor of an area into the design of the hotel. The Four Seasons has done this by utilizing local sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood and volcanic stone throughout the hotel. The hotel also showcases local artists work and serves fresh food purchased from the Pike Place Market.

The location of this property is ideally situated walking distance to restaurants, shopping and most of the major attractions in the area including the ferry terminals. The hotel reflects a sophisticated, urban chic feel, and yet as with all Four Seasons properties, has a relaxed and never stuffy atmosphere.

Check-In

I have to say that I found the staff at this hotel extremely accommodating on every level. Even prior to my arrival, I had a pleasant experience in dealing with the sales staff and the concierge who arranged transportation from the airport.

Upon my arrival, the front desk staff made every effort possible to put me in the best room available, even offering to move me into another room category during my stay when an upgrade became available…and they lived up to their word.

As a fun, interactive gesture, the staff keeps a stuffed fish behind the counter and will playfully reenact the fish toss made famous by the Pike Place Fish Market for its young (and young at heart) guests.

From the cheerful greeting at the entrance, through the check-in process and to the bellman who thoroughly described all the amenities in the room and places to go, I found the check-in process extremely easy and enjoyable.

Guest Rooms

Floors 1 through 10 house 147 hotel guest rooms and from the 10th floor up they are privately owned residential units…lucky them! The guest rooms are designed with a clean, simplistic elegance. Floor to ceiling glass windows offer extraordinary Elliott Bay or City views and give the room a really open feel. The room was extremely clean and the hotel in general still has that “new hotel” feel.

I stayed in the Deluxe Bay-View room with direct views of Elliott Bay with the snow-capped Olympic mountains as the backdrop. It was fun watching the ferries come in out of the bay. The waterfront is a little more industrial than I expected but it was still pretty view. I think the city view would probably be a nice option as well.

The room was spacious with a large bathroom including a deep soaking tub and a separate shower with a heavenly rain-shower head, not to mention some state-of-the-art design features such as a built-in TV installed behind the counter mirror. The bed was probably one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in with its feather mattress top and fluffy comforter.

DSC_0108-001

The rooms offer a simple minibar but you gotta love a hotel that extends a “happy hour” minibar discount. And since it might, you know, rain in Seattle, there is a complimentary umbrella located in the room for your use during your stay and they are also offered at the front entrance.

My one disappointment was that there was not a coffee maker in the room. They do offer complimentary coffee at the spa level in the mornings, but when I’m on vacation I love to wake up and leisurely have a cup of coffee while lounging in the room without having to worry about immediately getting dressed to go get a cup of coffee. But my bad…because I should have realized staying at a Four Seasons, all I had to do was mention it in casual conversation and a coffee maker magically appeared in my room…this is the Four Seasons difference.

As promised, when an upgrade became available, I was lucky enough to experience the Corner Elliott Bay Suite which had a separate living room and the bedroom had floor to ceiling corner glass walls offering an incredible panoramic view of the Bay. The bathroom also offered a sweeping corner view which can be enjoyed while soaking in the tub. I saw several different room categories and I have to say that I think this was my favorite room because of the size and the corner windows which optimize the views.

Spa

The hotel offers a 6,000 square foot full-service spa and is the only 4 Diamond rated spa in the state of Washington. The spa has a very serene and soothing decor with muted colors and glass tiles. The spa’s steam room and sauna are available complimentary to the hotel guests along with a 24 hour fitness room. There are 8 treatment rooms including a private room with a view, large tub and two massage tables for a couples retreat…rose pedals added on request. Day passes are sold to local residents and non-hotel guests.

The Four Seasons is the only hotel in Seattle with an outdoor infinity pool. In appropriate weather, Bar “84” ~ named for the year round temperature of the pool ~ offers libations and nibbles poolside.

Dining

ART is the property’s only on-site restaurant serving Urban Northwest cuisine influenced by the fresh market items procured at the Pike Place Market. The name ART was inspired by both the hotel’s collection and the Seattle Art Museum located across the street from the hotel. 24 hour room service is also available with a limited express 15 minute delivery menu for quick service…nice option. There is no lack of food here though, as just steps outside the hotel are numerous restaurants and all the offerings from the Market.

Unique To The Property

  • The hotel displays a vast collection of artwork throughout the property and offers a self-guided art tour ~ pick up the self-guided art brochure at the Front Desk.
  • Order a Lusty Lady cocktail at the Lounge.
  • Forgot your workout clothes? No problem, the hotel has workout clothes for your use.
  • Enjoy a Wine and Cheese Happy Hour; Market TV Trays…still hungry try the Midnight Happy Hour (some offerings are seasonal).
  • Steal a kiss ~ it is said that just outside the Four Seasons entrance, overlooking the water and ferris wheel is one of the most romantic places to kiss in the city.

Four Seasons Rancho Encantado | Santa Fe, NM

At the time that I stayed at Rancho Encantado in the fall of 2011, the property was managed by Auberge Resorts, since then it has been taken over by the Four Seasons. As these are both luxury brands, I don’t imagine there have been any major changes but I did want to disclose that fact.

Santa Fe - October 2011 035

If you’e not familiar with the Santa Fe area then I’ll give you a precursor to say that you will most likely fly into Albuquerque then drive approximately an hour to Santa Fe. I went back and forth on whether I wanted to stay right in downtown Santa Fe or if I wanted to stay at Rancho Encantado which is located approximately 10 minutes from the downtown area.

Since I knew I was going to have a rental car, I decided to stay at the Encantado because it looked like such a nice property and I wanted to experience it. There are some very highly rated properties right downtown as well such as Relais & Chateaux’s Inn of the Five Graces and Rosewood’s Inn of the Anasazi. These are options I would consider if I wanted to stay in the downtown area. It really comes down to your personal choice of being right downtown within walking distance of everything or being a little further out to enjoy a more spacious and peaceful environment.

The Property

Rancho Encantado is set against the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the 65 casitas are designed to blend into the landscape. The casitas are all spacious and designed with a sophisticated Southwest flavor. The resort portrays a casual elegance and exudes a serene atmosphere. The full service spa enhances this feeling with its regionally inspired treatments along with a fitness and movement center. The pool is open year round and overlooks the desert views. The resorts’ tranquil setting is perfect for rest, relaxation and rejuvenating your spirit.

Santa Fe - October 2011 016The Guest Rooms

I stayed in a Summit Suite which has a bedroom area, large bath and a living room with a fireplace. Each unit has an outdoor terrace and some have outdoor fireplaces. The Summit and Sunset Suites sit a little higher on the property and offer a nice view of the surrounding area and some beautiful sunsets.

The rooms tastefully reflect the Southwest flavor and incorporate some local artisans work such as native drum side tables, original artwork, and beautiful coffee table books. Small touches like the cowhide light fixtures with leather trim and hammered metal mirror frames, along with beamed ceilings and wood-burning fireplaces add an authentic feel to the casitas.

Each morning, I would wake up and make myself a cup of coffee and sit on the outdoor lounge chair soaking up the stillness of the morning. And on a couple of the evenings, I decided that I couldn’t think of a nicer place to enjoy the night sky and have dinner than on the terrace by the outdoor fire.

Dining

Start the evening off at the restaurant’s bar and enjoy a drink while sitting around the round fire pit and watching the sun set. Terra, the resort’s only restaurant, combines New Mexican culinary traditions and Southwestern influences and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The decor is stylish and they offer indoor and outdoor seating. And as mentioned before, my preference on several evenings was in-room dining by the outdoor fireplace which is such a pleasant option.

Others might disagree, but in my opinion, after spending a long day walking around downtown Santa Fe the 10 minute drive back to Rancho Encantado is worth it to me for the peace and quiet of this enchanting resort.

Four Seasons Maui | Maui, HI

If you haven’t been to Maui, Hawaii, then I strongly suggest you add this wonderful paradise to your list. Maui, in my opinion, is one of the best Hawaiian islands because it’s not as crazy as Oahu but still has enough night life to keep you entertained.

At the top of my list for luxury accommodations is the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. As with all Four Seasons properties, the extraordinary service is what creates the ultimate experience and guarantees that your stay will be an absolute pleasure.

Maui 7-2013 245.NEF

Wailea is a beautiful and upscale location on the island and many of the high-end hotels are located here. It is approximately a 30 minute drive to the more touristy area of Lahaina and Ka’anapali which hosts the majority of hotels, shops and restaurants on the island.

The Property

The Four Seasons Maui is a medium size property situated on Wailea Beach in a cove setting and shares the beach with the Grand Wailea Resort. The Grand Wailea Resort is a huge luxury resort and is an extremely active property with a lot of families. The Four Seasons is also a very family-friendly resort but is a much more intimate setting, which I personally prefer. I will say though, that even if you are staying at the Four Seasons, I do recommend walking next door and checking out the Grand Wailea Spa. It was named one of the top 10 spas in the United States by Conde Nast and its exclusive Terme Hydrotherapy Water Circuit is not to be missed.

The grounds at the Four Seasons are lush with plantings of large banana trees, hibiscus flowers and other indigenous plants that give the resort a very tropical feel. The public spaces of the resort are designed to be open and airy creating that indoor/outdoor living concept. The hub of the activity centers around the Lobby Bar and a must is to have a sunset drink while munching on their delicious (and addictive) house made fruit and nut mix. I actually enjoy grabbing a casual dinner here as well, but there are three on-property restaurants for your dining pleasure, SpagoFerraro’s Bar E Ristorante, and Duo Steak and Seafood.

The Guest Rooms

Four Seasons, Maui

The rooms at this resort are simplistically classic in decor and spacious. A very nice feature are the large, marble bathrooms with dual sinks, soaking tub and separate shower. Something to know is that this resort is built in a horseshoe shape and because of this, very few rooms have straightforward ocean views. The ones that do are either the suites, or the rooms that are most inward. The remaining rooms are located on the sides of the building facing the water to one side or another. The Prime Ocean View category rooms will get you the best views as they are located at the ends closest to the water and on the higher levels.

The Beach and Pool

Wailea Beach is a nice, large stretch of clean sand. The snorkeling is as good here as anywhere on the island and it is common to see large Sea Turtles swimming around along with many other sea life. The Four Seasons will set up chairs and an umbrella for you on the beach and they do provide drink and food service throughout the day.

If you prefer a pool setting, then you can choose from one of three pools ~ the main pool, kids pool and my personal favorite, the adult Serenity pool. There is a charge for the cabanas at the Serenity pool but they do not charge for the cabanas at the main pool which is a nice perk, those are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Not that there is any reason to leave this resort with the great snorkeling right outside the door, 3 pools, a spa and gym, golf, tennis, onsite scheduled activities and other amenities; but if you are looking for some fun day excursions you may want to consider the drive to Hana (read up on this first ~ this is an all day adventurous ride) and grab lunch or dinner at Mama’s Fish House along the way, diving, zip lining, or maybe a catamaran ride over the island of Lana’i on the Trilogy. If you do the latter, be sure to visit the (2) Four Seasons hotels located on Lana’i ~ Four Seasons Manele Bay and Four Seasons Koele. If you want to check out the best luau on the island, make reservations (a must) at the Old Lahaina Luau. All in all, Maui is a fail-safe vacation that will always leave you wanting more.

Amangiri | Canyon Point, UT

Amangiri is one of the most unique and incredible resorts I have ever experienced. Amangiri, meaning peaceful mountain, fully lives up to its name. If you don’t leave this resort completely rested and decompressed after staying here then check yourself into the closest mad-house because there’s no hope for you.

Utah 226

The Property

This resort is located in a remote area called Canyon Point, Utah approximately a 25 minute drive to the closest town of Page, Arizona which hosts the closest airport. I purposefully flew into St. George to see that area, and then made the several hour drive to Amangiri taking me past Zion National Park {an incredible sight to see} and I found the experience to be a pleasant drive.

The resort entrance sign is fairly discrete and I actually passed it on my first try. When I made the correct turn off the main road, I drove a short distance and then came to a very nondescript cattle gate where I had to buzz the front desk. For a split moment, I wondered if I was at the right location, and if I was, had I made the right decision to stay here. And then, the gate opened {this was eventually referred to as the gate to heaven}….I followed the winding road through an amazing sandstone canyon that was a jaw-dropping sight. At this point I hadn’t even seen the resort, but it didn’t matter, I was right where I was supposed to be.

This very small, secluded resort is designed to blend into the natural landscape by utilizing an earth tone color palate, clean lines and incorporating the extraordinary landscape as the main attraction. Simplicity and clean lines define this resort. The indoor/outdoor living concept expressed throughout the resort fully engages your senses and connects you with the spirit of the environment.

Check-In

When I finally crested the canyon, still speechless from the beauty I had just witnessed, I arrived to a staff line-up waiting to greet me {just like in those period movies where the rich owner drives up and his staff is waiting to greet him}. Talk about feeling special! I was greeted by name, they immediately acknowledged a birthday celebration and then I was whisked up to the reception desk and checked into my room effortlessly.

Guest Rooms

This intimate property of only 34 units offers each guest a contemporary room designed with simplistic elegance utilizing natural wood and stone finishes. Each room has its own private entrance and patio. Once you enter into the private courtyard, you are looking directly through two end-to-end glass walls facing directly out towards the stunning landscape. The wall facing the outdoor patio opens up to the width of the room to create an amazing indoor/outdoor living experience.

One of my favorite experiences was hanging out on the patio each night by the fire pit, laying on the cushioned sitting bed staring at the zillions of stars in the sky.

As an added perk, the mini-bar is complimentary and although this resort is seemingly so remote, each room offers all the modern conveniences you could need.

Utah 200

Spa

If you’re looking to get your Zen on, then you’ve come to the right place. This full-service spa is almost a spiritual experience. As you enter through a large cast-iron door, you step into a dimly, candle-lit room and you almost immediately start to feel your stress melt away.

Nothing is ordinary about this spa. From the treatments which reflect the elements of the Navajo culture to the stone-lined soaking pool and outdoor treatment rooms with desert views, each experience engages your senses and transcends you to a complete place of relaxation. All guests are invited to use the Water Pavilion’s steam room, dry sauna and cold plunge pool.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the dining room with its floor to ceiling glass walls overlooking both the expansive desert views on one side and the resort focal point of the pool built around a beautiful, indigenous rock. The resort likes to evoke an intimate feeling with the dining experience that is reminiscent of private residence dining.

On my first night at the resort I was not aware of this concept and at first waited to be seated, then I was informed to sit wherever I chose. After the meal, I kept waiting for my waiter to bring me the bill and yet it never came. When I finally inquired about it, I was told there is no bill ~ now wait, that doesn’t mean you’re not being billed for it, it just means you don’t get a physical bill at the table. Some people may like this concept and others may not as you are not immediately seeing what you are being charged for. I actually enjoyed the fact that I could just leave the table when I was done.

Due to the fact that this resort is so remote, it’s not as if you can just hop in the car and head out to another restaurant for the evening. So the majority or all of your meals will be eaten here. The restaurant tries to vary the menu as much as they can, but I did find it a bit repetitive and limiting after four days at the resort. Having said that, they are very accommodating in offering to make any dish you request assuming they have the ingredients to make it.

The Pool

The crowned jewel at this resort is the pool. After seeing a photograph of it in a travel magazine, it was the catalyst that got me to seek out this resort and make my way to it. I had to see this extraordinary and unique pool first hand.

It’s surreal and beautiful at first sight. The water flows around the rock in a horseshoe formation. The deck is surrounded by a beautiful rock wall infiltrated with all the beautiful colors of the earth showing through. The lounge chairs with their oversized cushions fold flat to make lounge beds. Quite decadent.

Although you would come to a place like this for complete relaxation and rejuvenation, there is actually plenty to do here to keep you busy during the days. There are endless hiking trails throughout the property which you can explore on your own or take one of the guided hikes that the resort offers. Lake Powell and the city of Page are worth a day trip to check out the local sights such as Horsehoe Bend and more. The resort concierge can also arrange for more extravagant excursions such as hot-air ballooning, horseback riding and even a helicopter ride.

A little trivia fact is that Hollywood has even come calling to this remote resort as some scenes from Broken Arrow with John Travolta and the movie John Carter have been filmed here. Some prop shacks from Broken Arrow still stand on the property.

This resort is all about relaxing and restoring your soul. Needless to say, I’m very awe-struck with this property. Even writing this review makes me want to go back. In my opinion, it is truly an incredible experience of a lifetime. Until next time Aman Resorts…
